I live in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada and my family runs a float plane service, outposts and a lodge. This is more than a business; it is a life style.
Every year, every season, every day brings something new. I try to blog about life our way.

How to Make Your Fish Look More Awesome: PART ONE

Perspective, perspective, perspective. Hold the fish out in front of you towards the camera. This adds at least a few inches. This is definitely the most important!
Same walleye, different gauge of awesome.
It is also good to have an facial expression that shows you are straining to hold up the gigantic fish. Thanks, Jimmy!

Last Year

On this day last year - May 28th - the boys jumped in the lake. And no, it wasn't swimming temperature. Brrrrrrrr...in water that was too cold for a Canuck, our two American friends and our Swiss friend jumped in! That's Walter, LeRoy, and one of our guests.
Jen and I are waiting for it to warm up so we can go swimming! The temperature of the lake has to catch up with the heat of the beautifully warm days we've been having. We'll wait 'til June I think!

Last night's sunset

Douglas Lake was calm and pretty last night.

It's warm & beautiful today!

It's 16 degrees C (60 degrees F) today! It's beautiful and sunny with a few clouds in the sky. Everyone is out fishing. Our guests - Herb, Joe, and Jimmy, and Jake Vidas's group - are out catching walleye for a fish fry tonight. Hugh and Brahm are out flying in CF-BYA, doing camp checks and getting Domain ready for guests. Jen is taking a short break from cooking, and is reading a book on the rock in front of Gramma's porch. Harriet and Gramma planted 2 trays full of pansies in front of the lodge. Enid is reading the paper. Everyone is enjoying the day. Maybe it's summer?!

Rhian Flies to Viking Island

Rhian Nault

Rhian's first trip! Gwyneth and 9-month-old Rhian came to Viking Island on the Norseman this past weekend. For her first ride in an airplane, she did great...she actually slept like a baby. Thank goodness, what would I do if my granddaughter didn't like to fly.

Photos, Photos, Photos!

Check out some of Harriet's PHOTOS on Flickr. Everything Red Lake & Viking Island related, all seasons... So there are lots to check out when you have time!

Norseman CF-LZO

This Noorduyn Norseman CF-LZO is parked at the Red Lake Airport. So, it is on wheels, which is a rarity. We've heard that the owner is flying it around Canada to celebrate 100 years of Canadian Aviation. Since Red Lake is the Norseman Capital of the World, he is apparently beginning and finishing the trip here! It is a beautiful aircraft!
Read about the history of the Norseman!

Tom Robertson opens camp with us!

Thanks, Tom, for spending the week with us, opening up the camp! Tom Robertson, his brother Dave, and his father Harry, and their crew have been coming to Viking Island for a long time. And by "a long time", we mean every year since 1951. They are definitely family! Opening camp was chilly and quiet...and hard work! Tom - you're a trooper as usual!
Now this week he's fishing full time!

Herb and Joe at the Island

It doesn't take Herb and Joe long to find the walleye. In fact we had walleye for supper their first day in camp.Herb Pozdro Joe Petykowski
Jimmy on the other hand has a different idea of a successful catch.

Jimmy Petykowski

Traditionally, Herb and Joe are the springtime pioneers of the fishing season. They have always come the first week Viking Island is open. You'll see their names written first in the guest book every year for decades now! They've toughed it out through all kinds of opening weeks...they've even had to break trail through ice to get to camp! Good to have you back, Joe and Herb! It is always great to see you and have you here!

Enid's brothers get put to work!

Enid's brothers Niall and Peter, along with their childhood friend Doug Angus, and Niall's daughter Caitlin and her friend Kyle came to Viking Island for the weekend! This is an annual tradition for Enid, who puts them all to work chopping wood, collecting logs, cleaning up the island, leveling cabins, and the list goes on...

They only get to fishing once the work day is done and dinner is had. This of course is the best part of the day, so we focused on that with our photo collage!

Niall and Peter brought some regionally-produced cheese from Thunder Oak Cheese Farm in Thunder Bay. We lost it out of the airplane, into the lake, while we were unloading. Doug was the hero the next day when he managed to fish the ten pound, wax-coated disc of cheese out of the icy depths of Douglas Lake.

We really appreciate having them here. All their help has made the yard clean, the wood piles stocked, the fish startled, and the spirits high! Thanks, guys!

We are Fishing at Viking Island

Oh, yes, walleye for supper are fine!
The cabins are clean, the kitchen is scrubbed and Herb and Joe arrive tomorrow. Pat Perkins and Jake Vidas and crew will be flying in on Saturday. Finally the weather has smartened up and I know why I love being out here!

I'm at Viking Island

and it is great to be here!
The water is running, the phone is on, and it is a bright sunny day.
The island is covered with moose tracks so I am hoping to meet up with this moose maybe in the morning when all is quiet. Henry, my friendly raven is not here to greet me which is strange and perhaps sad, but I will be listening for his call and hoping....

Cal Gosselin, our new pilot and a photographer

Cal is from Atikokan and has been around planes all his life. I can see we are going to have some awesome photos taken by him this summer. They are really too good for this old blog. Stay tuned......

Planning to Fly a Canoe out of Red Lake?

Transport Canada will be enforcing the regulations on external loads this season. Old exemptions will no longer apply. Some air services can no longer haul any external loads. It is important to check with your air service to make sure that their floatplanes can legally haul external loads. Floatplanes are legal for only certain sizes of boats, canoes and kayaks. The external loads also cut down the total amount of weight the aircraft can take.

At Viking Outpost Air, we can legally haul a 18 foot canoe on our Cessna 185 and a 16 foot canoe with our De Haviland Beaver.

Flying Again

Bright sun and melting now.
We're preparing to fly the guys to Telescope.
Hurray!

Saturday, opening day of Walleye Season

Bright Sun, but still cold and not much melting yet.

Telescope Lake

Hugh preparing Telescope for opening weekend This post is for Phil Parsons and crew who are planning to spend opening week fishing on Telescope. Last Wednesday, Hugh, Cal and Brahm had the camp ready, boats in the water, the whole shebang. Honest, Cal took the picture! Now the boats must be full of snow!
Here's hoping the boys will be fishing today....
Looks like they will get there.

Opening Day of Walleye Season is Tomorrow

The snow came as a surprise. We srambled to move planes to save harbour and went back later to sweep the snow off the wings. The local boys who planned for a long weekend of walleye fishing are at home tonight. There's not even a hockey game on.
The weather report calls for sun by Saturday afternoon
- we're planning on it!!

Oh NO - More Snow

This entry is for Herb and Joe who have come fishing to Viking Island opening week of walleye season forever. This year they will be here with Jim for the second week of fishing.
GOOD IDEA!

Oh yes the Ice is Gone!

This morning we awake to wind and rain. Florence sat and watched the ice blow down the lake along with our neighbours dock! JB has been busy flying the Beaver out of the river and tomorrow he will bring the plane home to our dock. Hugh can plan a trip to Winnipeg to bring back the Norseman. I don't know if McInnes Lake is open yet; we need to check. However all the other lakes are open now.

Gullrock Lake, May 10, 2009Gwyneth Carlson, 4 wheel Biker

Ice Update

There are a few planes in the air now, so we are getting ice reports.
Teleacope is open enough to land and the guys are headed out there now.
Craig flew up north to Rheaume and Orono. He was able to land at Rheaume to drop stuff off but not at the cabin. Both lakes are full of ice but a good wind would take it out easily.
Little Vermilion is open and Brett is flying into there.
Dan Baughman and crew will be flying into Bow Narrows Camp tomorrow to get ready.
I'll keep you updated as the days go by.

Cal and Brahm Ready to Fly...

Our new pilots are here and ready to fly. Cal Gosselin is from Atikokan and is a northerner already. Brahm Perl, from St. Thomas, is from a keen aviation family.

Here they are waiting for Hugh who is taking them out to clean up Telescope Cabin today. They need to do more than fly around here.

Snow in May

It is been a cold snowy day, but Craig will have Howey Bay open soon!

Viking Outpost Base

Soon we will be able to park at the dock!

Douglas Lake May 6

Oh Yes, we'll be at camp on time!
You can see Viking Island Lodge at the top of the lake.
Some ice has piled up on the shore in front of lodge.
Sun, wind or rain would clear the ice completely at this stage.

Bow Narrows Camp

Bow Narrows Camp, May 6, 2009Dan and Brenda can fly into camp!

A few people have asked about Bow Narrows Camp and here's the scene on May 6. Hugh flew over yesterday and called Dan with good news. Dan, Brenda and crew can fly into camp as planned on Tuesday and soon will be boating up the lake. This is earlier than last year. Sun, wind or rain will get rid of the remaining ice - we just need the weather to cooperate.

We can fly into Domain and Telescope

This is Domain Lake on May 6, 2009. Hurray! Domain Lake, May 6, 2009Telescope, Optic and Douglas were close to being open. Optic Lake, May 6, 2009

Ice Depth on Red Lake

video

Hugh and our new pilot were out checking the depth of the ice today; 13 inches and candled. Looking good. Last year, Hugh landed at the bridge with the Cessna on the same day, May 4. This year the ice on Red Lake looks weaker and we are hoping for an earlier breakup than last year's date of May 21. Of course, most of our outposts are clear of ice much earlier as they do not have winter traffic to pack down the snow and create thicker ice.

Hugh will be flying later this week and will be checking the outpost lakes then. I'll keep you updated.

Parked at the Bridge

Get your hands out of your pockets, boys! Time to get to Work!John says, "Ice out on Howey Bay will be May 8th." I hope.....
John is the manager at Amik Outposts. He operates out of the base by bridge - the place to park when everyone else's dock is frozen in. Check out their website or John's blog

Thanks Johnny. One day we'll help you out.

Flying off the Ice onto the River

video

This is a yearly spring event. It must be done when the ice is smooth but not rock hard. The path is walked carefully beforehand to scope out any bumps or sticks.

Good News: Two planes are in the water at the bridge ready to go.

Sportsman Annual Dinner

On Saturday night, it was the 30th annual Sportmens Dinner. Florence, Craig and Hugh have gone every year. They meet with other operators, suppliers and friends and just have a good time.

Last chance for a party before the season begins!

May 1 and the ice is disappearing

Craig figures breakup is going to be late, but yesterday, a little rain and then sun made a big difference. We like to see the ice turn black. It means it is candling and on its way out. We'll keep you up to date.
