I live in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada and my family runs a float plane service, outposts and a lodge. This is more than a business; it is a life style.
Every year, every season, every day brings something new. I try to blog about life our way.

Gwyneth Drives the Ice Road to Work

video

Everyone likes a short commute. This year the ice road is well used....no ploughing necessary, at least so far. You can drive your truck out to your ice hut or just to your favourite fishing hole. There is lots of action right out at the windsock in the middle of Howey Bay.

View from my Office Window

I have been busy looking after my granddaughter and helping build Arthur's house, but it is time to get back into my office. As I sit down to start, this is the scene out the window.
The weather is warm (just below freezing) and there is very little snow. These deer are looking for crabapples and enjoying a nice winter. Deer have been moving north as the weather on average has warmed. Last year they took a hit with deeper snow and cold temperatures, but not so this year.
In Red Lake, we wonder about this change in wildlife. The deer bring with them ticks, brain worm and coyotes. All of these will affect the moose and woodland caribou. Woodland caribou are already stressed and few in numbers.
On the plus side, it is a wonderful to watch these deer.

A Mum with twins on McInnes Lake

Happy New Year to all of you. I was looking through some Canada pictures this past weekend and thought you might like these that Gary Martin and I took back in 2008. (1st week of June on McInnes Lake)
I look forward to another spring of fishing up in Canada with Gary Martin crew.

Leigh lives the good life

Our friend Leigh Moncrief has a house on an island; a beautiful spot on McKenzie Island. In the summer he drives by our place each day by boat with his dog in the front enjoying the ride. Winter affords him the luxury of driving home. So far he has needed very little plowing.

Please don't drink & drive this holiday season

No, actually, it's not a crash site. Hugh just has his ice fishing hut tipped on it's side in order to change one of the runner skis. The ski broke last winter when it froze into the ice in the springtime. Hugh is still debating where he is going to park the hut on Red Lake.
