I live in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada and my family runs a float plane service, outposts and a lodge. This is more than a business; it is a life style. Every year, every season, every day brings something new. I try to blog about life our way.

Ice on Red Lake, Ontario, April 20, 2011
Hugh measured the ice today in front of our house. He was surprised to find only 10 inches of good ice with 5 inches of slush ice on top. I heard that someone put their 4 wheeler through the ice today. It seems the ice is going even thought it still feels cold and snowy around here. Last year, Hugh and I landed on Howey Bay on the water on April 17th. I have to admit that there was just barely enough room and Hugh landed just to beat the record. However there is no sign of water at the same narrows today.
Maybe May 14th for break-up, but that's a wild guess.
HI, Thanks for what you do on info. We have a group of 5 you will be flying in to Little Vermilion. We hope to go in on May 8. Any update on the ice at the float base other than the brave (insane) snowmobilier which showed ice out around the bridge? And the little lakes between Red Lake and Balmertown? Little V goes out early but Brett is out of town and our info has been cut off for a week. Help! Todd
Hi, Hugh and I have been away as well. Home now and the ice has taken a beating. We will be taking pictures and maybe a video today for the blog. There is plenty of open water at the bridge where Brett operates, enough to operate a float plane. We are bringing our plane in from Selkirk at the beginning of next week and parking it there. We'll have an aerial report then of the surrounding lakes. Yes, Little V opens up long before Red Lake so you may be ok for May 8, but can't be sure yet!!
Thanks for the ice update.
ReplyDeletePlease keep 'em coming.
