I live in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada and my family runs a float plane service, outposts and a lodge. This is more than a business; it is a life style.
Every year, every season, every day brings something new. I try to blog about life our way.

Take a Couple of Kids Fishing

Grandpa Herb Pozdro has a recipe for a good time.
He brought his son, Steve, and grandsons, Zach and Evan
fishing at Viking Island.
Here's how it went.
1. Take the kids out of school (You are popular right away)
2. Stick them on a float plane and take them way back in the bush.
Zach commented that it is like the nature channel here.3. Try to get them up early (or not, depending on the weather)4. Show them how to catch big fish.5. Let them out fish you.
Nice walleye ZachNice lake trout Evan
Nice northern Evan.
Watch his teeth

6. Take them on a portage.
7. Take them up the creek.8. Leave them on an island9. Tire them out.10. Have a good laugh11. Let them drive the boat.12. Let them play cards. No computers in sight.

Two happy kids fishing with their Grandpa

A Rare Encounter with Woodland Caribou

Nick Galle and his group fish Rheaume Lake every spring. They came upon this mother and calf along the shore. Woodland caribou often calf on islands away from bears and wolves and, then, within a couple weeks, they head inland to a fen or jackpine forest. If you come across them in the water, steer clear as that little calf is having a rough time getting to the far shore.

I send the Guys out to Work and....

Matt and Dano need to learn the ropes. In the spring, my brothers and Tom Robertson come up for opening weekend of walleye season to help open up camp. So this is the perfect opportunity to teach these young guys the meaning of a good days work.......
Safety is important in the bush and some guys need to bring extra equipment to protect themselves, others and the enviroment.

An Evening Spin

video
Camp is ready and the boys are out for a spin; Matt Dicaire driving, Dan Kincaid on the camera. They are enjoying the glassy water and how in the front it looks like they aren't moving. I've got steak to grill and people coming this afternoon to celebrate the start of the season.
Hey are you thinking of fishing???
Give me a call.
Always room for a few more fishermen.

Herb, your cabin is ready (honest)

Herb has been coming up for the first week of fishing at Viking Island since long before I got here. He has seen every kind of weather; snow storms, ice, wind, rain and sunshine. Usually I am scambling to get water lines thawed, docks repaired and boats in the water, but this year, if I am not ready, I can't blame the weather!! There has never been a year as warm and sunny as this year.

Matt Dicaire, the new guy at Viking Island, is at work. His mother will be happy with this picture, but I'm sure Matt would rather be fishing.

Florence and Brian talking History

The first weekend of May is the Sportsman's Dinner. It is time for the outfitters and local people to get together and celebrate the beginning of a new season. FLorence has been there every year. At 96 and with an excellent memory, Florence is the go to person for local history.
Brian has set up a volunteer museum at the west end of Red Lake. It is a log cabin, restored and set up for people to drop in. Check it out if you visit the west end of the lake. Send Brian pictures or memories if you have stuff he can use.
